Identification

  • Blunt-tipped leaves with (usually) greater than 11 leaflets
  • Whorled leaves
  • Pipe cleaner-like inflorescence appears above the water surface, but this can be difficult to spot
  • Bright red growing tips
  • Pink or tan stems are pink to tan in color
  • Large internodal spacing between whorls
  • If held upside down, the plant droops around the stem

Threats

  • Fills in fish habitat
  • Ensnares motors and fishing lures
  • Interferes with swimming and boating
  • Devalues shoreline property
