Invasive Species

Our Mission
The HCSWCD’s mission is to manage and promote the wise us of natural resources in Hamilton County.  Monitoring and protecting the integrity of our county waters and lands has been a major concern for many
years.  Now we have embraced the effort to prevent the spread of invasive species into the county.  A non-
native invasive species is one that is introduced outside of its historical range, reproduces rapidly, displaces
native species and decreases biodiversity.

We have partnered with the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program (APIPP), our water quality
coordinating committee, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Hamilton County (CCE), local towns and
highway departments, and lake associations to accomplish this task.  Efforts including participating and
promoting APIPP workshops; developing and distributing educational posters, brochures, and displays;
working with CCE to inventory invasive species, offering presentations; monitoring for invasive species; and management practices.  Contact our office if you are interested in scheduling a presentation discussing the
biology of invasive species and  management strategies.

White Nose Syndrome

A fungus is killing our bats, and scientists are working to determine the specifics.  Some bat populations in caves have reached 80-100% mortality.  With an alarming decrease in bat populations comes increased insect populations, resulting in the use of more pesticides.
