Envirothon

In 1979, Pennsylvania held the first Environmental Olympics, and over the years, the event has gained popularity across the U.S. In 1990, New York State held its first Envirothon competition. Students’ knowledge of natural resource management and environmental science is tested at the annual Envirothon held every May at the HCSWCD’s Nature Trail. High school teams consisting of 5 students are tested in the following areas: soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and a current environmental issue. They have the opportunity to utilize problem solving techniques and knowledge gained during training and study sessions to answer questions. The winning team of the local competition competes at the New York State Envirothon in May.

2009 Event
A bright, cool Spring day greeted 24 students at Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District’s annual Envirothon on April 30 in Lake Pleasant.  The Envirothon is an outdoor competition that gives high school students the opportunity to utilize problem solving techniques, teamwork skills, and knowledge gained during training sessions to complete tests in 5 categories, including Aquatics, Current Issue (Biodiversity in a Changing World), Forestry, Soils, and Wildlife.  Teams from Indian Lake Central School advised by Sarah Boggia, Long Lake Central School advised by Maureen Lynch, and Wells Central School advised by Chris Young competed in this year’s event.  The Indian Lake Hip Waders took first place all around and placed first in Forestry and the Current Issue.  The Long Lake Warthogs received second place all around and first place in Aquatics.  The Indian Lake Wood Frogs placed third all around, and received first place in Wildlife.  The Wells Snake Eyes took first place in Soils.  The Hip Waders will have their names engraved on a plaque, and will represent Hamilton County at the New York State Envirothon at Keuka College May 27-28.  Congratulations to all teams who participated in this year’s event.  Thank you to Charlie John’s Store who donated food for the Presenter Luncheon as well as to the presenters and volunteers who wrote exams and helped to make the Hamilton County Envirothon a tremendous success.
