Water Quality

The HCSWCD is dedicated to protecting water quality through lake and stream monitoring, our volunteer water monitoring program, aquatic invasive species monitoring, water stewardship, stormwater, free water quality presentations and alternative septic system information.

Lake Monitoring
From June-August, 21 Hamilton County lakes are monitored for a spectrum of parameters.  The purpose of the program is to collect data over an extended period of time to keep a watchful eye out for changes.  Lakes monitored include

Stream Monitoring
Stream health is assessed using benthic macroinvertebrates. These organisms are sensitive to pollution, and changes in their community may reflect a problem.

Volunteer Water Monitoring Program
The purpose of this program is to identify possible sources of shoreline pollution that may not be seen in the HCSWCD's lake monitoring results. Volunteers are trained to use the monitoring equipment, analyze water samples for pollutants, and survey for invasive plants.  Contact the HCSWCD if you would like to become a volunteer at 518-548-3991 or hcswcd@frontiernet.net.

Water Quality Presentations
Conservation Educator Caitlin Stewart offers free presentations concerning aquatic invasive species, watershed stewardship, lake and stream monitoring, and lake trends. Contact the HCSWCD office to schedule a free water quality presentation for your group, organization, or school  Outdoor labs available.
