Envirothon

In 1979, Pennsylvania held the first Environmental Olympics, and over the years, the event has gained popularity across the U.S. In 1990, New York State held its first Envirothon competition. Students’ knowledge of natural resource management and environmental science is tested at the annual Envirothon held every May at the HCSWCD’s Nature Trail. High school teams consisting of 5 students are tested in the following areas: soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and a current environmental issue. They have the opportunity to utilize problem solving techniques and knowledge gained during training and study sessions to answer questions. The winning team of the local competition competes at the New York State Envirothon in May.
